King of the Hill/ Keeping MOHAA Alive
« on: February 11, 2016, 10:57:08 pm »
Hello All,

Hope everyone is well. It's been a few months since I have personally been able to make my way to MFF, but I'm sure most of you have seen BRATS members playing in MFF lately. It seems like just yesterday we each had a packed server with players fighting to connect almost every night! Unfortunately those days are behind us and the direction of MOHAA has changed. Clans aren't competing to have the most members or the best players anymore. Those that are left stick around because they've found a good group of people who keep coming back night after night to laugh about life and unwind on TeamSpeak.

With that in mind, I'm sure you are all aware that I have asked cK about the release of a few MFF Original Mods, particularly the King of the Hill mod. King of the Hill (KOTH) is available to the general public, but not as the mod that you have all come to know. cK did an excellent job modifying the original KOTH mod into something spectacular, and proprietary. There are very few active servers with more than 5 players on a regular basis, which doesn't bode well for any players downloading MOHAA for the first time (Yes, this still happens!). If we want to keep this game alive, we have to work together to get people to stick around. Over at BRATS we play a heck of a lot of custom maps - there are over 300 in our current rotation. 6 days a week we play in our Customs server. This means we are unfortunately excluding a large portion of MOHAA players from enjoying the game with us. This isn't intentional, though it's to be expected when a download is required to enter a server (not many people are going to download 300 maps for a game they've just installed). To combat this, we turn our public Freeze-Tag/Capture the Flag/Demolition server on for one night a week. Even with just one night in a public/stock server, we have seen a consistent average of 2 new players per month who continue to come back to our servers. These players download our maps, hang out on TeamSpeak, and recently - have been asked to join our clan.

Why does this matter to MFF you're probably wondering? If BRATS can host the KOTH mod on our public server for one night a week, the new influx of players we have been seeing consistently will be exposed to MFF. I have agreed to retain all of cK's credits, and even advertise a link to mffclan.org while KOTH is running. This isn't a ploy to re-brand cK's hard work and take credit for it. I have zero intention of distributing KOTH or sharing it without the express written consent of cK himself. Simply put, we've attempted to join MFF to play King of the Hill - but with no admins online to set the gametype or watch over the server, things can go haywire in an instant. KOTH is a fun gametype, and provides a break from the delayed respawn of Freeze-Tag. This "mix-up" is just what we need to retain new players who are used to fast paced games like Call of Duty or Counter Strike. If you all are willing to help keep MOHAA alive with us, we're more than happy to help keep MFF alive.

As always, any MFF member is more than welcome to play in our servers or join our TeamSpeak. We've been seeing lots of Cookie lately, hopefully we can see more of you soon! If you need the password to join either the server or TeamSpeak, just post on our site and let me know - I'd be more than happy to send a PM containing the same information we provide to all our guests. If you have any questions for me or for BRATS - feel free to reach out to me via email, darren@clanbrats.org or message me on the MFF or BRATS website.
